Residency FAQs
Thank you for your interest in Hillcrest Transitional Housing. Before you complete the application, please read the following information carefully.
What is Hillcrest Transitional Housing?
Hillcrest is a transitional housing program designed to provide an apartment for three months so that a family can save money, pay off bills, regain confidence, and then move into their own home. Required weekly classes teach families about budgeting, nutrition, and job skills.
How many apartments are available and where are they located?
There are 10 apartments available in Clay County, 8 in Eastern Jackson County, 6 in Platte County, and 3 in Wyandotte County.
What are the apartments like?
Some of the apartments have one bedroom, large living rooms, which may be used as a bedroom, a kitchen/breakfast area, and one bath. Some apartments are large studios with separate “eat-in” kitchens. Each apartment is furnished, including dishes, pots & pans, linens, etc. There is a tenant phone (local calls only), but phones are not always available for the individual apartments. There are washers and dryers located at each housing site, but there is not storage space available.
What are the requirements for me to be involved with Hillcrest?
- All adults in the family must have a full-time job or be ready to actively seek employment.
- Adults will attend weekly sessions with counselors to work on budgeting, nutrition, and employment.
- Children must have constant supervision.
- Each guest is expected to work hard at saving money and work at securing a residence by the end of his/her three-month stay.
- Each guest family will help with apartment up-keep as well as the apartment hallways, laundry facilities, and yards.
How do I apply?
Anyone interested in Hillcrest Ministries must submit a written application, in person or via the website. It is then the applicant's responsibility to contact Hillcrest on a daily basis to express an ongoing interest in the program. Once an apartment is available, the applicant will be invited to an interview. The committee of staff members will visit with each applicant about their needs, concerns, and goals. When the family attends the interview, it is helpful to have information about debts and sources of income. At that time we will provide more details about the program. We then ask the applicant to go home and sleep on it to decide if this program will be a good match and we will do the same. A decision will be made after the final interview.
