In memory of my little sister, Sunny Lynn Swanson, 38, who passed away October 2009 in Belleville, Illinois. She had been homeless off and on and desperately needed health care, food and shelter. She had a heart of gold and other homeless people in Belleville told how she gave whatever she had to others in need and helped them find courage and strength in Jesus Christ in their desperate hours of need. Many, including myself and social agencies in Illinois failed my sister, but the Lord did not. She was a victim of abuse as a child in foster homes as well as adulthood and seemed to fall through all the cracks in todays social & health systems. She passed while being held in the Belleville City jail overnite. She was arrested day before her passing in an abandoned house where she tried to seek shelter from the cold rain. I want to find a way to help the homeless in Belleville or at least get the shelters back open which were recently closed. If I can bring awareness to this horrific problem that plagues city of Belleville, IL I will at least be helping her friends. I need advise on how to organize candelight vigil so to speak, to bring awareness to this problem in my sisters name and memory. I hope to bring media attention as was done when my sister passed in the jail from the local papers etc. and to release lighted balloons at a set time at Rotary Park where many homeless hang out. This in remembrance of Sunny and every homeless person out there. Can anyone advise me how to get started? I must do this on Saturday, October 16, 2010 one year anniversay of Sunny's death. She had a sixteen year old son. In the meantime I have been lead by my heart to help the homeless in my community so I feel very blessed to help and to participate. Always, Stacey Bray

What is Walk for the Homeless?

Hillcrest Walk for the Homeless is an event that raises awareness and funds to support Hillcrest in its mission to transition homeless families to self-sufficiency.

Participating in Walk for the Homeless is an excellent way to show your support for Hillcrest and the families we serve. However, what makes the biggest difference for the Hillcrest families and children are the dollars you collect through pledges. Without the love and support given by the thousands of walkers in past years, Hillcrest could not succeed.

Thousands of community members across the Kansas City Area have participated in Walk for the Homeless for almost 20 years, and we would like to invite you to join them. This year's event promises to be even more exciting and successful for all, so register today!
